Saturday, October 23 will be a special day for Best Buddies Maryland as we take part in the Inaugural Eunice Kennedy Shriver Challenge to be held in Washington, D.C. The Challenge will feature a number of events, including a 20-mile cycling event starting at the Washington Monument. There will also be a 5K run, 3k walk. Shorter tandem and relay events will follow the ride, run and walk. At the conclusion of the event, a picnic on the National Mall will be held.
Adrian Fenty, mayor of Washington, D.C., will serve as the honorary chairman of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Challenge.
The event pays tribute to the extraordinary vision and commitment of Mrs. Shriver and the tradition of making a difference that began here in her backyard. Mrs. Shriver, was the founder of Special Olympics and long-time board member of Best Buddies. The day will honor her inspiration, impact and indomitable spirit and challenge generations to “play on” by becoming agents of acceptance and action in their communities.
In addition to friends and admirers of Mrs. Shriver, hundreds of Best Buddies participants and Special Olympics athletes are expected to take part in this recreational event that will celebrate Mrs. Shriver’s love of sports and friendship. Today, her vision lives through the work of her sons – Anthony, founder and chairman of Best Buddies, and Timothy, who is the CEO of Special Olympics International. Through this event, the two movements will help build more communities of acceptance and inclusion.
