This may come off as a little biased, but I figured it was time for me to share my own experience as a volunteer for the Citizens Program. Plus, give my Best Buddy, Kristy, a chance to shine in the spotlight -- hey, it's not her fault she's matched with the program manager!
In August, Kristy and I will celebrate our three year anniversary of being Best Buddies. For me, it has been a positive experience as I not only gained a new friend, but also acquired insight on the ups and downs of being a volunteer.
Like any Buddy Pair, we have our challenges -- time management being No. 1. There's no doubt that some months it's hard to meet the visiting commitment (right now I'm balancing a full time job and classes three nights a week). But just as with my friends outside of the Citizens Program, finding the time to spend with my Best Buddy takes communication and planning.
My outings with Kristy are something that I look forward to each and every month. We like going out to eat, taking walks around Patterson Park and attending several of the Citizens Program events. Kristy reminds me of the everyday simple pleasures and when my life gets hectic, it's nice that she helps me put things into perspective.
Thank you Kristy for your friendship over the years. Gee whiz, time flies!
